LIGHTREEL FILM FESTIVAL WASHINGTON, DC

THE LIGHTREEL PROGRAM

Independent Cinema. Cultural Discovery. Meaningful Connections.

01 / OUR FOUNDATION

A Festival Built Around Stories

Since its founding in 2019, the LightReel Film Festival has championed independent cinema, multicultural storytelling, and the filmmakers whose distinctive perspectives expand how audiences experience the world.

Established by film critic, producer, and cultural institution builder Timothy E. Gordon, LightReel has grown into a Washington, DC-based celebration of cinematic discovery, creative expression, and community engagement.

02 / LIGHTREEL8

Washington, DC. Three Days of Discovery.

In 2027, LightReel returns to the nation's capital for its eighth edition, June 3–5, bringing together filmmakers, industry professionals, artists, cultural organizations, and film enthusiasts for three days dedicated to storytelling, artistic exploration, and meaningful connections.

Set against the cultural backdrop of Washington, DC, the festival creates an inviting environment where emerging voices meet established talent and independent films find new audiences.

03 / THE PROGRAM

More Than a Screening

Festival programming features narrative and documentary screenings, filmmaker conversations, panel discussions, industry insights, networking opportunities, and special events designed to connect audiences directly with the creative minds behind the films.

Beyond the screenings, LightReel encourages collaboration, professional development, and the exchange of ideas that extend the festival experience beyond the theater.

04 / CREATIVE OPPORTUNITY

Discovering the Next Generation

As LightReel continues to evolve, its commitment to filmmaker discovery and creative opportunity remains central to its mission.

Through initiatives such as LightReel Discovery, an independently developed filmmaking program created by Gordon in partnership with originalFlix, the festival also serves as a premiere platform for new short-film projects supported through production funding and professional crew resources.

05 / THE ORGANIZATION

Rooted in Purpose

The LightReel Film Festival is presented by the Foundation for the Augmentation of African-Americans in Film (FAAAF), a nonprofit organization founded in 2004 to celebrate Black cinematic achievement, advance professional development, and expand opportunities within the entertainment industry.

Through LightReel, the foundation extends its commitment to artistic excellence by creating a welcoming multicultural environment for filmmakers and audiences.

THE LIGHTREEL PHILOSOPHY

At LightReel, the experience doesn't end when the credits roll. It's where the conversation begins.
