About LightReel

A Celebration of BIPOC Storytelling

LightReel is a multi-day film festival in Washington, DC, celebrating Black and BIPOC storytellers through film screenings, live conversations, and cultural events.

Presented in the Union Market District, LightReel brings together filmmakers, industry leaders, and audiences for four days of discovery, dialogue, and community. From bold premieres to dynamic IndustryInsights sessions and signature social gatherings, the festival serves as both celebration and catalyst.

Our Mission

LightReel exists to amplify voices from across the African diaspora and beyond. Through curated programming, industry access, and year-round engagement, the festival supports filmmakers while creating meaningful cultural exchange.

Why LightReel Matters

LightReel creates space for stories that are often underrepresented in mainstream cinema. By centering Black and BIPOC storytellers, the festival fosters cultural dialogue, expands access to industry networks, and builds lasting creative community.

A Growing Cultural Platform

Since its founding, LightReel has evolved into a multi-day celebration featuring screenings, IndustryInsights conversations, live events, and community programming designed to connect artists and audiences in meaningful ways.

LightReel is more than a festival. It is a platform for possibility.
