About LightReel

Festival Mission

LightReel Film Festival celebrates bold multicultural storytelling through film, television, music, and cultural conversations that connect audiences across Washington, DC and the global diaspora.

The LightReel Story

Founded in Washington, DC, LightReel Film Festival was created to amplify multicultural voices and create meaningful connections between filmmakers, artists, audiences, and communities through the power of cinema.

What began as a growing independent film festival has evolved into a multi-venue cultural experience featuring screenings, conversations, IndustryInsights programming, filmmaker engagement, educational outreach, and community activations throughout the Union Market District.

LightReel exists to celebrate stories that challenge, inspire, entertain, and reflect the richness of the global diaspora.

From the District to the Diaspora

“From the District to the Diaspora” reflects LightReel’s commitment to connecting local creativity with global storytelling.

The festival celebrates filmmakers and artists whose stories cross borders, cultures, and generations while remaining rooted in community, identity, and cinematic expression.
