LightReel is Washington, DC's largest multicultural film festival, celebrating independent cinema and the filmmakers who bring distinctive stories, voices and perspectives to the screen.
Through thoughtfully curated screenings, filmmaker conversations and shared experiences, LightReel creates a space where films are more than something audiences watch. They become the beginning of conversations, connections and community.
Each year, LightReel brings filmmakers, audiences and industry professionals together to discover new work, exchange ideas and celebrate storytelling from across cultures and communities.
OUR STORY
From an Idea to a Festival Community
LightReel began with a simple idea: create a space where independent filmmakers could share their work, connect with audiences and become part of a community built around the power of storytelling.
What began as an intimate gathering has grown into Washington, DC's largest multicultural film festival, welcoming filmmakers and stories from across the country and around the world.
Through screenings, conversations, panels and shared experiences, LightReel has continued to evolve while remaining grounded in its commitment to filmmakers, audiences and the communities that bring independent cinema to life.
In 2027, that journey continues as LightReel 8 returns June 3–5 in Washington, DC.

LightReel exists to champion filmmakers and create meaningful opportunities for independent stories to reach audiences.
We celebrate cinema that reflects the breadth of our cultures, communities and experiences, while creating spaces where filmmakers can engage directly with audiences, exchange ideas and build lasting connections.
By bringing diverse voices and perspectives together through film, LightReel uses storytelling as a bridge between people, cultures and communities.
Every story deserves an audience. Every voice deserves the opportunity to be heard.
ABOUT FAAAF
Building a Future for Black Storytelling
LightReel is a division of the Foundation for the Augmentation of African Americans in Film (FAAAF), a nonprofit organization committed to preserving the legacy of Black cinema, elevating contemporary voices and creating opportunities for the next generation of storytellers.
Through film exhibition, recognition, education, professional development and cultural preservation, FAAAF supports filmmakers and film professionals while strengthening the institutions and opportunities that help Black stories thrive.
LightReel extends that mission by creating a multicultural space where filmmakers, audiences and communities come together through the shared experience of cinema.
