FESTIVAL OVERVIEW

Celebrating Independent Cinema. Discovering New Voices.

Founded in 2019, the LightReel Film Festival is a celebration of independent filmmaking, creative discovery, and the power of storytelling to connect communities. Established by film critic, producer, and cultural institution builder Timothy E. Gordon, LightReel provides a platform for emerging and established filmmakers to share distinctive stories, engage audiences, and build meaningful relationships within the entertainment industry.

Now based in Washington, DC, LightReel continues to develop as a destination for independent cinema, filmmaker engagement, and cultural exchange. The festival brings together storytellers, industry professionals, creative leaders, and film enthusiasts for an experience that extends beyond traditional screenings.

In 2027, LightReel returns for its eighth edition, LightReel8, June 3–5, in Washington, DC. Over three days, the festival will present independent film showcases, signature screenings, filmmaker conversations, industry panels, networking experiences, and special celebrations that recognize the creativity and contributions of independent storytellers.

Festival programming includes Opening and Closing Night presentations, narrative features, documentaries, short films, IndustryInsights conversations, audience-focused cultural discussions, and the festival's Podcast-in-Residence experience.

LightReel8 also introduces LightReel Discovery, an independently developed initiative created by Timothy E. Gordon in partnership with originalFlix. The program supports the production of two original narrative short films through production funding and professional crew resources, with completed projects scheduled to premiere during the festival.

Presented by the Foundation for the Augmentation of African-Americans in Film (FAAAF), LightReel reflects a commitment to expanding opportunities for creative professionals and building sustainable platforms for artistic expression.

We believe the best film festivals don't simply show movies. They discover voices, create connections, and help stories move forward.
