LightReel Announces Its Winners

The LightReel Film Festival Kicks Off its Film Series

(WASHINGTON, DC – June 22, 2023) – For the first time in their new home in Washington, DC, the fourth annual LightReel Film Festival announced the category winners of this year’s festival on their website.

To wrap the festival in a nice and neat bow, for the second year in a row, the LightReel Film Festival released the festival winners in four different categories: Best Documentary Short, Best Narrative Short, Best Documentary Feature, and Best Narrative Feature.

The Best Narrative Short award went to the inspirational and creative film, We Were Meant To.  Directed by Tari Wariebi, the rite of passage film followed a young man named Akil who faced a number of barriers in an attempt to find his trajectory.

Best Narrative Feature was awarded to the film Mickey Hardaway, a film that highlighted the importance of mental health care as a young artist engages in a therapy session inside his home.  Hardaway is the creation of writer/director Marcellus Cox.

Directed by Johnny Holder, the Best Documentary Short Feature was announced to be the incredible short film Sonora which focused on a blind birdwatcher in Colombia.  Holder was the Filmmaker of the Month for the month of May for DC Radio and became the only local filmmaker to be recognized this year.

Ballin’ Abroad was named the Best Documentary Feature of the festival.  Ballin’ Abroad followed five athletes playing basketball players in the Chinese Basketball Association.  Abroad was directed by Sonny Weems and Tywanna Smith.

Also on the website, the LightReel Film Festival announced the launch of its film series.  In celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of hip-hop, LightReel in conjunction with the National Hip-Hop Museum will present a twentieth-anniversary screening of the classic movie, Krush Groove.
