A New Vision for The LightReel Film Festival

(WASHINGTON, DC – September 1, 2022) – The rebranded LightReel Film Festival, in the continued pursuit of achieving its true destiny as the premier festival in the city of Washington, DC, broadens its scope of programming to a level unseen by any festival in this area and few in the world.

Executive Festival Director Tim Gordon announced that the LightReel Film Festival (formerly known as the Lakefront Film Festival) will be entering into the world of virtual cinema by programming VR/360° films.  “Virtual media is a bold new frontier that allows viewers to experience movies in a way that is truly immersive and extremely inventive,”  Gordon stated. “This is an exciting opportunity to expose our community to the new possibilities and promise of filmmaking in the future…and that future starts now! The slate of virtual reality films will be a welcomed addition to the already stellar programming LightReel will present.”

In a move unprecedented by any festival short of the world’s larger festivals like the Sundance Film Festival, LightReel will feature a dedicated, fully equipped space for the virtual experience.  Patrons will have the opportunity to enjoy a full slate of virtual reality films during the entire run of the festival.  Additionally, the festival will offer opportunities for festival attendees to meet and converse directly with the creators and directors of their films through impromptu Q&A sessions and through a talk series panel.

In accordance with the new programming focus, the LightReel Film Festival has hired immersive media expert and award-winning director, Adrian Rashad Driscoll as its head programmer for immersive media.  Director Gordon relayed “Driscoll’s experience and knowledge of the immersive media space will be an incredible asset to the success of this ambitious and unequaled course of BIPOC festival programming.”

Submissions for the LightReel Film Festival are open now.  The festival starts on June 7, 2023, with its opening night festivities and closing on June 10, 2023.  More events, information, and news can be found on the LFF website at www.lightreelfilmfest.com.
